ST. AUGUSTINE –
Kyleigh Taylor had a great debut in a Flagler College uniform as she went 4-for-5 with three home runs, and five runs batted in a season-opening split with Barry University Saturday afternoon at Flagler Field. Flagler won the opener 5-1, but Barry took the second game 7-3.
In the first game, Taylor hit a three-run shot to left-center and
Maria Kappos followed with a solo shot to left giving Flagler (1-1) at 4-0 lead.
That's all
Kyra Gipson (1-0) would need as she retired the first six batters she faced and would face just two over the minimum to pick up the win. She scattered two hits, allowed one run, and fanned four batters. Gipson retired nine batters on ground outs and seven more on fly outs.
Taylor went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. Kappos added a double to her home run. She scored a run and drove in another.
Jordanna Hartley (0-2) allowed five runs on seven hits and took the loss for the Buccaneers.
Payton Germer hit a solo home run in the seventh and Hartley hit a double in the third.
In the second game, Taylor hit her second blast of the day, a shot to center, to stake Flagler to a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning.
Barry (2-2) answered with a four-run fifth with the help of a two-run single by Germer and she later stole home to give the Buccaneers a 4-1 lead.
Taylor hit another solo home run in the sixth, but Barry scored three more times in the seventh to put the game away.
Sarah Johnson (2-0) went the distance and scattered seven hits. She fanned five batters.
Courtney Chisolm collected three singles and scored a run while Taylor Checkley finished with a pair of singles and scored a run.
Madelyn Wise (0-1) took the loss in relief for the Saints. She allowed six earned runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings pitched.
Sidney Mathis started and allowed four hits in 3 1/3 scoreless innings.
Courtney Robinson went 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI for Flagler.
