SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Flagler College women's basketball team played a solid 20 minutes, but the University of South Carolina Upstate rallied in the second half to win 52-42 Sunday afternoon at the G.B. Hodge Center.
USC Upstate (2-2), a member of NCAA Division I and the Big South Conference, won its second game in as many days. For Flagler, the game was an exhibition. The Saints open the regular season on Friday (Dec. 11) against the University of North Georgia in a non-conference game at Flagler Gymnasium at 1:30 p.m. That game is closed to the public for safety reasons.
The Saints got off to a quick 6-2 start and led by as many as 12 points in the second quarter.
Jaziana Mathis sank one of her game-high five 3-pointers with 1:15 left in the half to give Flagler a 30-18 lead. Mathis scored a team-high 16 points for the Saints.
The Saints took a 30-21 lead in to the locker room.
"I was really satisfied with our execution in the first half," said head coach
Mo Smith. "We found some open shooters and knocked some shots down."
Flagler held USC Upstate to 1-of-10 shooting from the field in the second quarter.
In the second half, the Spartans used a 23-1 run that covered 11 minutes and 13 seconds. That wiped out Flagler's eight-point lead. Molly Coleman accounted for nine of USC Upstate's points in that spurt.
"Upstate took advantage in the second half by going full-court," said Smith. "They got us in foul trouble. Their defensive switches made it tough."
Denijsha Wilson led the Spartans with 16 points and seven rebounds while Coleman and McKinley Brooks-Sumpter added 13 and 12 points, respectively. Marnicha Prudent grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
Sadie Russell corralled a game-high 11 rebounds for Flagler. She added three blocked shots and a pair of steals to her line.
Tori Pearce dished out five assists.
