Lottie pours in 36 as Saints clip Ospreys

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jaizec Lottie scored 24 of his game-high 36 points in the first half as Flagler College won its second game against a NCAA Division I opponent, this time taking down the University of North Florida 73-66 at the UNF Arena on Saturday.

Flagler raised its record to 2-1 on the season. North Florida, a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference, dropped to 1-8.

"I am really proud of our guys grit tonight," said head coach Chad Warner. "I have so much respect for UNF, and especially Coach (Matthew) Driscoll. In many ways, we want to emulate what they have built."

The Ospreys, who only lead for 5:34, tied the game at 63 after a short jumper by Jose Placer with 4:22 left in regulation.

The Saints were able to close the game on an 8-3 run, and a slam dunk by Jalen Barr with 23 seconds left sealed the victory. Lottie found a wide-open Barr on the left baseline who took a power dribble and then threw down a two-handed jam.

A missed three-pointer and a turnover on the offensive rebound by UNF, along with a foul, wrapped up the game. Lottie sank a pair of free throws with six seconds left for the final tallies.

Lottie made 13-of-24 from the field and was clutch at the foul line sinking 9-of-11. He added seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals to his line. Jalen Barr recorded his second consecutive double-double of the young season with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Derrick Ellis, Jr. added nine points and dished out five assists. Spencer Bain came off the bench to sink three 3-pointers to account for all of his nine points.

Flagler dominated the paint as it outscored UNF 40-20. The Saints also forced 15 Osprey turnovers and converted those into 20 points.

"Tonight was a special night that saw big contributions by a lot of players," said Warner. "Hopefully this is something we can build upon."

Placer sank six 3-pointers, which helped him score a team-high 26 points for UNF. Dorian James added 14 points and seven rebounds.

Flagler will take a break for the holidays and will open PBC competition on Jan. 6 at the University of North Georgia.

NOTE: Flagler is the first Peach Belt Conference men's basketball team to defeat two NCAA Division I teams in the same season…The Saints won their third game in a row over the Ospreys and the first since Nov. 26, 2002 when UNF was a part of NCAA Division II…UNF was a member of the PBC from 1997-2005...The last time a NCAA Division II team beat to NCAA Division I team was in 2012 when the University of Alaska Anchorage defeated UC Riverside and Loyola Marymount University in the Great Alaska Shootout.
