ST. AUGUSTINE –
Gedi Juozapaitis scored 27 of his game-high 35 points in the second half to help Flagler College fend off a stubborn Young Harris College team 101-97 in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Monday afternoon at Flagler Gym.
Flagler (8-8 overall, 4-4 PBC) held a 12-point lead in the second half but Young Harris (3-13, 1-7) chipped away and took a 97-96 lead on a three-pointer by Seth McCoy with 16 seconds left. Juozapaitis answered with his three-pointer right in front of the Flagler bench with 4.9 seconds left.
Brian Harper brought the ball down for the Mountain Lions and he went up for a three-pointer with 0.8 seconds left on the clock, but was stopped by
Allante Pickens who forced a travelling call. That call drew the ire of the Young Harris staff and the head coach was called for a technical foul.
Juozapaitis knocked down both shots and all the Saints had to do was inbounds the ball to end the game.
Juozapaitis tied his career high for points as he made 12-of-17 from the field and 9-of-13 from 3-point range. The nine treys tied a school record. The last Flagler player to make that many was Clay Whorden against Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Feb. 9, 1989).
The Saints tied a school record with 19 three-pointers, equaling the mark Flagler had against Trinity College of Florida (Nov. 15, 2007). The Saints sank a season-best 54.3 percent from long range.
Allante Pickens added 22 points and eight assists while
Derrick Ellis, Jr. contributed 12 points and tied his season high with 13 assists.
Damerit Brown tacked on 15 points and grabbed six rebounds.
Chris Metzger chipped in with 13 points.
Damir Hadzic grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Flagler finished with a 62.7 percent shooting percentage, its best mark of the season.
Harper led the Mountain Lions with 30 points and 12 assists. Ryle Owens added 18 points coming off the bench while Jonathan King and Jacorie Archie contributed 15 and 10 points, respectively.
Flagler hosts Lander University on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. on "Retro Night."
