Saints sweep Bobcats then lose a hard-fought five-setter to Embry-Riddle

ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College swept Lees-McRae College (25-15, 25-15, 25-15) but then lost a tough back-and-forth match to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University 3-2 (25-19, 26-28, 25-19, 21-25, 9-15) as the two-day Flagler Saints Classic came to a close Saturday at Flagler Gymnasium.

Flagler posted a 2-2 record in the tournament and holds a 5-3 overall record. Embry-Riddle leaves with a 4-0 record. Walsh University went 3-1 and it left with a 5-2 mark. The University of West Georgia (3-5) went 1-3 while Lees-McRae (0-8) lost its four matches.

In the first match of the day, Flagler used 14 players in its sweep of Lees-McRae.

The Saints hit .309 with 39 kills and 10 errors on 94 swings. Flagler tallied a season-high 13 aces, four of which came from Karlie Redfern.

Jordan Taylor finished with a match-high 10 kills and she hit a red-hot .533 with just two errors on 15 swings. She added three total blocks. Logan Garcia added seven more kills. Kayla Norelli collected 15 digs while Kennedy Muff tallied 28 assists.

Caitlyn Smirne led the Bobcats with six kills. Kaitlyn Arentz gathered a match-high 18 digs.

The nightcap was against former Florida Sun Conference rival Embry-Riddle. This match saw 30 ties and 15 lead changes. But it was the Eagles who started the fifth set on a 7-1 run and held on for a 15-9 victory.

Redfern recorded a season-high 19 kills and added 12 digs to complete the double-double for the Saints. Rachel Machovec finished with 13 kills and 12 digs while Rebekah Machovec added 13 kills and four total blocks. Muff tallied a season-best 49 assists and Norelli collected 16 digs.

Jordan Schumacher led the Eagles with 17 kills. Melanie Crawford added 11 kills while Camden Bitter came off the bench to provide 11 kills and 13 digs. Olivia Roa collected 26 digs and Jenna Bishop notched a double-double with 52 assists and 11 digs.

Flagler heads to St. Charles, Missouri, which is near the hometown of Sarah Schark, to play in the Lindenwood Challenge next weekend.
