COLUMBUS, Ga. – No. 4 (Oracle/ITA Division II ranking) Flagler College lost a preliminary round match to No. 8 Lander University, 4-3, in a NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Saturday afternoon at the Walden Tennis Center.
Lander, the No. 5 seed in the regional, improved to 18-5 on the season and advanced to face top-seed Columbus State. Flagler, the No. 4 seed, ended its season with a 16-7 mark.
The Bearcats got on the board first with a pair of wins in doubles. Eirik Groner and Adam Elliget downed
Rasmus Jonsson and
Konstantin Dustmann, 6-2. Moments later, Ozan Cildir and Omar El-Moslemany defeated
Luca Bolla and
Daniel Arrien, 6-3.
Lukas Storck, ranked No. 62 in the nation, got Flagler's first point with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 1 over No. 50 Axel Cronje. The Saints took a 2-1 lead when Bolla defeated Aly Zaghloul 7-5 and 6-4 at No. 4. But the Bearcats would regain the lead, 3-2, after wins at Nos. 6 and 5.
Jonsson knocked off No. 65 Groner 6-3, 2-6, and 6-4 at No. 2 singles to square the match at 3-all. Everything hinged on No. 3 singles and Cilder out-lasted
Felipe Carvalho 6-2, 3-6, 7-6(4) to close out the match.
