FLORENCE, S.C. –
Megan Miller went 2-for-3 and scored the game-winning run in the first game for Flagler College while Francis Marion University got the split by scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh as both games were decided by the same 3-2 score Saturday afternoon at the FMU Softball Stadium.
Flagler is 24-17 overall and 7-3 in the Peach Belt. Francis Marion moves to 24-15 overall and 3-7 in conference play.
In the opener, the Saints took a quick lead on a solo home run by
Tatum Morgan in the first inning.
Maria Kappos hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, which scored
Genevieve Mangini, to tie the game at 2-all.
In the seventh, Miller led off with a single and took second on a sacrifice bunt by
NaJah Gerrald. Gerrald reached first base safely when Patriot second baseman Jaimie Harney was unable to handle the throw. Gerrald was able to advance to second, and Miller, to third on the error.
Garland Evans drew a walk to load the bases and Mangini followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score Miller with the go-ahead run.
Kyra Gipson (13-7) was able to wiggle out of a jam in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory. The Patriots had runners at second and third with one out and Gipson fanned the next batter and then got the last batter to pop out to shortstop.
Gipson scattered four hits and allowed two runs to go along with five strikeouts. She retired nine batters on fly outs and seven more on ground outs.
Katelyn Ellard (15-6) surrendered three runs on eight hits for Francis Marion.
Jessica Harney went 2-for-3 with a solo home run.
In game two, the Saints scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning, thanks to an RBI single by Miller and
Morgan Murphy scored on a ground out.
But the Patriots answered in the seventh inning. Jessica Harney led off the inning with a walk and Jaimie Harney followed with a double. Jennie Polak singled through the hole at shortstop to plate the first run of the inning.
Flagler changed pitchers as
Alayna Savaglio was called on to stop the Patriots rally.
Pinch runner Liberty Schultz stole second and Francis Marion had both runners in scoring position. Karson Parker reached on a sacrifice bunt that scored Jaimie Harney to tie the game. Parker stole second, but that did not matter as Tayler DeLeon drew a walk to load the bases. Taylor Johnson ended the game by drawing the bases-loaded walk.
Amie Hutchison (3-4) allowed just one earned run on four hits. She induced 15 ground outs.
Katlyn McCue (8-5) took the hard-luck loss. She surrendered three runs on three hits with five strikeouts. McCue issued four walks.
Flagler concludes its road trip with another conference doubleheader tomorrow (April 7) at UNC Pembroke.
