ST. AUGUSTINE – The No. 9 (Oracle/ITA Division II ranking) Flagler College men's tennis team defeated No. 20 Azusa Pacific University 4-1 in a non-conference men's tennis match Wednesday afternoon at the Flagler Tennis Center.
Flagler won its third match in a row and improved to 12-5. Azusa Pacific had its 11-match winning streak snapped and fell to 19-2.
"Azusa Pacific is a very good opponent," said director of tennis
Thomas Hipp. "Every match was close and winning the doubles point gave us momentum for singles. Konstantin (Dustmann) clinched it after having match points as 5-2, 5-3, and 5-4. At 5-all, he pulled it off and won 7-5. It was a good team performance."
The Saints lost the first doubles match, but captured the team point after
Luca Bolla and
Daniel Arrien won their match as well as
Lukas Storck and
Felipe Carvalho. Storck and Carvalho edged Jakob Schnaitter and Jesse Haas 7-6(3).
Bolla and
Rasmus Jonsson both won in straight sets in their singles matches to give Flagler a commanding 3-0 lead. The Cougars were able to post a win at No. 4, but Dustmann clinched with his win at No. 6.
Flagler hosts Keiser University on Friday in an exhibition match at 3 p.m. at the Flagler Tennis Center. The Saints return to regular season play on Sunday against No. 18 Georgia College at 1 p.m. at the Flagler Tennis Center.
