ST. AUGUSTINE –
Jason Moore blasted a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Flagler College a 6-4 win over Georgia College in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday night at Drysdale Field.
Flagler won its sixth game in a row and improved to 22-17 overall and 14-8 in the Peach Belt. The Saints are a half a game out of first place. Georgia College dropped to 21-15 overall and 11-9 in conference play.
The first two batters in the ninth for the Saints were retired, but
Aaron Anderson got his fourth hit of the game, a single up the middle to set up Moore's at bat. Moore had a 2-2 count against all-conference reliever Bradly Cammack (3-4). He smashed the pitch down the left-field line, which just stayed fair as it cleared the fence.
The Saints broke-up a 3-all tie with a run in the seventh on
Dillon Reed's RBI double.
The Bobcats answered in the top of the ninth. Pinch hitter Matthew Chester belted a double to the left-center gap with one out. Cam Hill followed by hitting a grounder to Flagler second baseman
Elliott Schubert, but Schubert's throw was in the dirt and Hill reached on the error and Chester advanced to third.
Austin Holloway hit a grounder to shortstop where
Steven DiPuglia flipped to Schubert for the force out, but Schubert's throw to first was off its mark and Holloway was safe. Chester crossed the plate on the play to tie the game.
Two batters later, Wesley Wommack tested Schubert again with a ground ball, but Schubert made the play to end the inning and it kept the game tied.
Nick Martinez (2-0) closed the game by tossing the last two-thirds of an inning to record the win.
Cooper Wallace (4.2IP, 7H, 3R, 2K) started and gave way to
Luke Cooksey (3.2IP, 4H, R, 2BB, K) who pitched well in relief.
Anderson led the 13-hit attack with four singles and he scored three runs. Moore went 2-for-5 with a double to go along with the home run, and three runs batted in. Reed finished 2-for-5 with a double, a run scored, and one RBI.
Cammack tossed four innings in relief and allowed three runs on five hits. He fanned seven batters.
Hill led the Bobcats going 3-for-5 with a double, a run scored, and one RBI.
The same two teams meet tomorrow at 2 p.m. on "Law Enforcement Appreciation Day" for a doubleheader at Drysdale Field.
