ST. AUGUSTINE –
Kyra Gipson tossed a one-hit shutout in Flagler College's 4-0 win over No. 10 (NFCA Division II Top 25) Florida Tech on a blustery Wednesday afternoon at Flagler Field.
Flagler extended its winning streak to five games and improved to 21-12 overall. It was the first time the Saints defeated a top-10 team since defeating then-No. 3 North Georgia 2-1 on March 16, 2017. The Saints also snapped a six-game losing streak to the Panthers. Florida Tech had its four-game winning streak snapped and fell to 26-8.
"This was a huge win," said head coach
Kathryn Geouge. "Kyra threw a great game and our defense did their jobs behind her. I am really happy with the progress we are making in the batter's box. This team gets better every day at practice and it is showing on game day."
Gipson (12-4) struck out seven batters and issued two walks. She retired eight batters on fly outs and six more on ground outs. In her last start on March 23 at Augusta, Gipson had a perfect game going until there were two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning in a game shortened due to run-rule. She lost the bid on a bloop single.
Today, she had a no-hitter with two outs in the top of the seventh, and that's when Florida Tech's Shanysse Emerenciana smashed a 2-2 pitch to the right of shortstop
Maria Kappos. She got to the ball and had to spin to throw, but she could not get enough on the throw to first to catch the speedy Emerenciana.
Gipson got all of the offense she would need in the second inning when
Garland Evans' double to left field scored pinch runner
Zoe Mooney from second base. The next batter,
Tatum Morgan, hit a single to left to score Evans.
In the fourth, Morgan hit an RBI double and then scored on
Natalie Murphy's single.
Evans went 2-for-3 with a double, one run batted in, and she scored two runs. Morgan went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and she scored a run.
Tina Velazquez (9-3) allowed four runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings for the Panthers.
Flagler heads back out on the road for the next 10 games. The Saints visit Columbus State University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
