ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College and the Queens University of Charlotte split a non-conference baseball doubleheader Saturday at Drysdale Field. The Saints won the opener 12-10 while the Royals rolled in the second game, 18-3.
Flagler took the weekend series winning two games. The Saints are 5-2 while the Royals are now 2-6.
In the opener, Queens scored three runs in the first inning on just one hit, but Flagler would strike for three of its own in the third.
A bases loaded walk to
Austin Davis along with back-to-back RBI singles by
Connor Laspina and
Ja'Kobi Dasher knotted the game.
The Saints added two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to take an 8-3 lead.
Queens erupted for a five-run sixth inning to tie the game. Noah Jones hit a two-run home run off the scoreboard in right-center to tie the game.
Sean Lawlor (2-4, 2B, 4RBI) hit a bases-clearing double in the seventh to stake the Saints to an 11-8 lead.
Nick Melton (3-5, HR, 3RBI (3-5, HR, 3RBI) hit a two-run home run in the ninth, but that would be as close as the Royals would get.
Nick Martinez (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Saints. He allowed four hits and two runs in three innings of work. Martinez collected three strikeouts.
Robert Girgis started and went five innings.
Noah Allen and
Ryan Ashworth combined for an inning on the hill.
Evan Lowe went 2-for-4 with a double and he scored two runs.
Jason Moore finished 1-for-3 with a double, two runs batted in, and he scored three times.
Landen Wright (0-1) took the loss in relief for the Royals. He surrendered four hits and four earned runs. He walked three and struck out two.
Jones went 2-for-4 with the home run, two runs scored, and two RBI. Austin Campbell and Chase Hager each collected two singles.
In game two, the Royals scored at least a run in each of the first four innings to take an 8-2 lead.
Jones hit his second home run of the day, a two-run shot in the first inning. C.J. Hammonds belted a three-run shot in the third inning.
Queens also scored three runs in the seventh and five more in the eighth.
The Royals stole seven bases in the game, including four by Dominic Ford.
He led the 12-hit barrage going 3-for-6 with a double, two runs scored, and two more driven in.
Jones and Hammonds each drove in four runs. Hammonds scored four runs.
Jake Bergren (1-1) scattered four hits and allowed three runs in five innings pitched. He issued five walks and fanned three batters.
Aaron Anderson went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the first inning.
Connor Laspina collected a couple of hits, including a double, and scored a run.
Jett Walsh (0-1) was one of six Flagler pitchers to see time on the mound. He started and took the loss. Walsh allowed five hits and five earned runs in three innings of work.
Flagler hosts Rollins College on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Drysdale Field.
