Garcia fans 12 as Saints hold off Royals

ST. AUGUSTINE – Derick Garcia (2-0) was nearly untouchable for seven innings as he struck out 12 batters to lead Flagler College to a 6-3 win over Queens University of Charlotte in a non-conference baseball game Friday evening at Drysdale Field.

Flagler improved to 4-1 on the season while Queens fell to 1-5.

Garcia allowed a leadoff single to Dominic Ford and then went on to retire the next 10 batters in a row, six on strikeouts. He wiggled out of a two-out bases loaded jam by striking out Chase Hager. That started another streak of retiring 10 batters in a row.

He tossed 88 pitches, 68 for strikes, and allowed just three hits.

The Saints had three RBI singles in the second inning. Steven DiPuglia (2-3, 2RBI) hit a run-scoring single past the third base bag, which plated Austin Davis (2-4, R, RBI). Dillon Reed's (2-2, R, 2RBI) single scored Ja'Kobi Dasher and two batters later, Aaron Anderson (2-5, RBI) singled in Reed.

Davis drove in what proved to be the game-winning run in the third inning when his double to right field scored Sean Lawlor who had led off the inning by drawing a walk.

Flagler added two more runs in the fifth for insurance. Back-to-back RBI singles by DiPuglia and Reed gave the Saints a 6-0 cushion.

The Royals, who are in their first year as a NCAA Division II varsity program, scored a run in the eighth and tallied two more in the ninth to make it interesting.

Nick Nelson (1-1) took the loss for the Royals after allowing 10 hits and six runs. He walked five and struck out four in 4 2/3 innings. Wes Boling pitched a scoreless 3 1/3 innings with three strikeouts.

Ford collected three singles, drove in a run, and stole two bases. Tanner Jacobson came off the bench to go 2-for-2 with a double and he scored a run.

The same two teams meet tomorrow in a noon doubleheader at Drysdale Field.
