Saints split two games on Sunday

VIERA, Fla. – Flagler College concluded the Florida Tech Invitational on Sunday by winning the second game of the day, 3-1, against Lynn University, but lost the opener to Florida Tech, 6-1, at the USSSA Space Coast Complex.

Flagler leaves with a 9-9 overall record. Florida Tech was 14-2 and Lynn departed with a 9-10 record.

In the second game, Flagler got on the board first. Tatum Morgan hit a one-out triple to right-center. Genevieve Mangini followed by reaching on an infield single, but Morgan had to hold at third. With Maria Kappos at the plate, the Saints tried a squeeze bunt, but Lynn catcher Grace Hastings had a hard time controlling the pitch, which allowed Morgan to score on the passed ball. Mangini made it all the way to third base on the play.

Morgan Murphy's single to left field scored Mangini and the Saints lead 2-0.

Natalie Murphy added an RBI single in the fifth inning.

Katlyn McCue (3-3) held the Lynn bats in check the rest of the way to pick up the win. She allowed one run on six hits. McCue retired 10 batters on fly outs and nine more on ground outs.

Allyson Jameston (3-5) scattered seven hits and allowed two earned runs in the loss.

Shayle Arenson went 2-for-3 with a double and one run batted in for the Fighting Knights. Mackenzie Wyatt collected two singles.

In the opener, Tina Velazquez helped out her own cause by socking a three-run home run to the left of the scoreboard over the right field wall to give Florida Tech a 5-0 lead.

Earlier, Shanysse Emerenciana hit an inside the park home run in the third inning. She went 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

Morgan Murphy drove in Flagler's lone run in the top of the seventh as she knocked in Tatum Morgan who led off the inning with a double.

Velazquez (5-0) scattered seven hits and allowed on run to earn the win for the Panthers.

Kyra Gipson (4-3) allowed five runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings for the Saints. Alayna Savaglio finished the game in the circle.

Morgan hit a pair of doubles for Flagler and Cassie Patterson singled twice.
 
Flagler hosts No. 7 (NFCA Division II Top 25) Valdosta State University in a doubleheader on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
