DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Five University of North Georgia errors led to five unearned runs as Flagler College rolled to an 8-1 win in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Saturday afternoon at Bob Stein Stadium.
Flagler evened its overall record to 7-7 and moved to 2-3 in the Peach Belt. North Georgia dropped to 8-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
With the score tied at 1-all going into the top of the sixth inning, Flagler got its first two hitters of the inning on base via errors.
Frankie Martello reached on an error by the second baseman and JaKobi Dasher followed by reaching first on an error by the pitcher. After being sacrificed over, UNG reliever Jordan Hampton hit the first batter he saw to load the bases. A new pitcher came in an allowed a sacrifice fly and then a passed ball accounted for the other run by the Saints.
Flagler went on to score five more runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Sean Lawlor and Martello hit back-to-back run-scoring singles.
Robert Girgis (2-0) scattered seven hits and allowed one run in 6 1/3 innings of work. He struck out nine batters.
Nick Martinez kept the Nighthawks off the board in the final 2 2/3 innings.
Jason Moore went 3-for-5 with a double and he scored a run.
Aaron Anderson singled twice and scored a run while Martello finished with two singles, two runs scored and one run batted in.
Dillon Reed had two RBI.
Daniel McClary (1-1) was tagged with the loss for North Georgia. He lasted two-thirds of an inning in relief and allowed two unearned runs. The Nighthawks used eight different pitchers.
Nick Clarno went -3for-4 with a double and Josh Profit hit a solo home run in the third.
The same two teams will meet in the rubber game tomorrow at noon.
