MORROW, Ga. – Flagler College went on a tear in the second half shooting 70.4 percent and
Gedi Juozapaitis scored 31 of his season-high 35 points in that half to lead the Saints to an 87-80 win over Clayton State University in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at The Loch.
Flagler snapped a six-game losing streak to improve to 8-15 overall and 5-12 in the Peach Belt. Clayton State suffered its third loss in a row and fell to 8-15 overall and 5-12 in conference play.
"Winning feels good," said head coach
Chad Warner, "but I am more proud of how we have been practicing and playing for each other. These guys are good young men. They are working hard and will continue to do so."
Juozapaitis' 31 points in a half is believed to be a new Flagler record. He was limited to just four points in the first half on 1-of-6 shooting from the field, but then erupted to make 10-of-11 in the second half, including 5-of-6 from 3-point range. He finished 5-of-8 from 3-point range, which tied the most made triples in a game this season for the freshman from London, England.
The game was a tale of two halves. The Saints struggled as they made only 28.6 percent of their shots from the field and trailed 37-28 at the break. Flagler only made 2-of-14 from 3-point range in the first 20 minutes, but found its range in the second half to the tune of 70 percent accuracy.
The Lakers lead at the half was their largest of the game, but the Saints were able to whittle away at the deficit and took the lead for good (47-46) on a Juozapaitis trey with 13:08 left to go.
Flagler held its largest lead (77-66) after a pair of free throws by Juozapaitis with 2:33 left in regulation.
Vaughn McCall scored 11 of his 24 points in the first half.
Jeffercy Jean added 11 points, seven rebounds, and dished out five assists.
DeMari Davis chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds.
Chris Metzger grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
