Game Recap: Softball |

Saints split a pair of one-run games

ST. AUGUSTINE – Katlyn McCue (1-2) retired the first 18-of-19 batters she faced to pitch Flagler College to a 1-0 win over Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in a non-conference softball game Sunday afternoon at Flagler Field. Flagler lost the first game of the day to Newberry College, 3-2.

Flagler finishes the weekend with a 4-6 overall record. Embry-Riddle leaves with a 3-5 mark. Newberry left with an 8-2 record.

In the second game, McCue tossed a two-hit shutout with three strikeouts. She forced 15 fly outs and another three batters to ground out.

Her no-hitter was broken up in the top of the fourth when Katy Thompson belted a home run over the left-center field wall. But when she got to home plate, Thompson hopped over the plate into the arms of her teammates waiting to congratulate her. The Saints appealed as McCue walked in from the circle to tag the plate for the force out.

Garland Evans led off the home half of the first for Flagler with a double to left-center. Tatum Morgan followed with a single to left and then Maria Kappos flied out to center, which allowed Evans to score the game's only run.

Jayla Jackson (1-3) was the hard-luck loser for Embry-Riddle. She allowed one run on three hits and fanned seven.

The Eagles had runners on first and second with one out in the seventh, but McCue retired the last two batters on infield pop ups.

In the first game of the day, Newberry erupted for three runs in the second inning which was just enough for Selice Daley (3-1) to post the win.

She allowed two runs on five hits in four-plus innings of work. Haley Simonds tossed three shutout innings to earn her first save of the season.

Kaley Carpenter hit a two-run double in the second inning for Newberry.

Paige Meyer and Julia Bomhardt each collected two singles for the Wolves.

Alayna Savaglio (1-3) tossed two innings and allowed two earned runs on two hits. Kyra Gipson finished with five scoreless innings.

Morgan hit a solo home run in the fifth and Genevieve Mangini hit an RBI-double in the first.

Flagler hosts Florida Tech on Tuesday (Feb. 12) at 5 p.m. at Flagler Field for a single game.
