Softball drops a pair on Saturday

ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College lost two games on Saturday in its mini-tournament at Flagler Field. Newberry College won the opener 3-1 and then Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University won the second game, 11-3.

Flagler's record dropped to 3-5. Newberry, which defeated Embry-Riddle (5-4) in the third game, is now 7-1. Embry-Riddle holds a 2-4 record.

In the opener, Haley Simonds socked a two-run home run in the first inning to give the Wolves a quick 2-0 lead.

That would be all the offense that Alyssa Ball (4-0) would need. She tossed a three-hitter and allowed just one run with three strikeouts. Ball retired the last eight batters in a row.

McKenzie Barneycastle collected three singles, scored a run, and drove in another for Newberry.

Flagler got its lone run in the sixth inning on Maria Kappos' RBI-double.

Kyra Gipson (2-1) allowed seven hits and three runs in the loss.

Tatum Morgan and Natalie Murphy each hit singles for the Saints.

In the second game, the Saints scored three runs in the first inning without the benefit of a hit. Three Embry-Riddle errors led to three unearned Flagler runs.

In the second inning, the Saints returned the favor as the Eagles scored five unearned runs on two hits. Flagler committed three errors.

Taryn Huston had the big hit of the inning, a two-run double.

Lisa Hop (1-2) settled in after the rocky first inning and wound up allowing just three hits and struck out nine batters. She retired 16-of-the-last-18 batters.

Lia Johnson hit a double, scored three times, and she drove in a run. Callie Rodriguez hit a double, scored two runs and knocked in a pair.

Katlyn McCue (0-2) last 1 1/3 innings, allowed one hit, and four unearned runs.

Garland Evans went 2-for-4 with a double and she scored a run.

Flagler opens the last day of the tournament tomorrow against Newberry College at 11 a.m. The Saints will face Embry-Riddle at 4 p.m.
