Carson-Newman downs Flagler, 3-1

WINGATE, N.C. – Karlie Redfern's 21-kill, 21-dig performance was not enough as No. 7 seed Flagler College had its season come to an end as No. 3 seed Carson-Newman University advanced with a 3-1 (25-19, 25-22, 21-25, 25-23) victory in the semifinal round of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Thursday evening at Cuddy Arena.

Carson-Newman (27-7) will play in tomorrow's regional final against the winner of the Augusta-Wingate match. Flagler finishes the season with a 24-9 record, but won 16-of-its-last-19 matches.

The Saints trailed 2-0 going into the third set. A Megan Oldenburger kill gave the Eagles a 13-11 lead, but Kennedy Muff answered with a kill of her and that sparked a 5-0 run and Flagler never trailed the rest of the set. Redfern had seven kills and eight digs in that set alone. In that set, Redfern became the 11th Flagler player to surpass the 1,000-kill milestone.

In the fourth set, the Saints held a 16-11 lead, but the Eagles were able to close the gap and tied the set at 21-all. Oldenburger broke a 22-all tie with a kill and Katie Parnell and Erin Edwards blocked Redfern to give Carson-Newman match point. Redfern found an opening on the opposite side of the net to keep the match going, but Edwards ended the match with a kill.

Oldenburger led the Eagles with 17 kills and 16 digs. Marnie Streeter added 11 kills, 18 digs, and four aces. Edwards hit .353 as she had 14 kills and just two errors on 34 swings. Elena Vasquez tallied 26 assists while Morgan Ballard led the defense with a match-high 28 digs. Kaina Roehrkasse chipped in with seven kills and six total blocks.

Rebekah Machovec finished with 10 kills, eight digs, and three block assists for the Saints. Kayla Norellli closed out her fantastic career with a team-high 22 digs to give her an even 2100, which is good for second all-time at Flagler. Kennedy Muff recorded a double-double with 37 assists and 13 digs. Logan Garcia had four block assists giving her 110 for the season, which ties a school record (Abby Meyers, 2013).

Muff and Redfern were selected to the all-tournament team.
