ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College closed the game on a 16-2 run to put away a stubborn Southern Wesleyan University team 84-66 in a non-conference men's basketball game Friday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium. It was the second contest of the Southeast Region Crossover Tournament.
Lander University defeated Anderson University 78-72 in the first game of the tournament.
The Saints held a 10-point (66-56) lead midway through the second half, but the Warriors managed to rally and pull to within four (68-64) with seven minutes left to go.
Allante Pickens sank a 3-pointer to ignite the run that put the game away.
Southern Wesleyan only made 1-of-13 from the field in the final six and one-half minutes, which included missing all seven 3-point attempts. Conversely, Flagler made 5-of-7 from the field and made 3-of-5 from long range.
Gedi Juozapaitis scored a game-high 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting from the field and he completed the double-double with 12 rebounds.
Damerit Brown scored 13 of his 18 points in the first half. Pickens and
Chris Metzger each contributed 10 points.
Derrick Ellis, Jr., tallied a game-high nine assists.
The Saints shot 63 percent (17-27) in the second half and made 15 treys in the game. Juozapaitis sank six 3-pointers and Brown had four.
Edwon Brady came off the bench to lead Southern Wesleyan with 12 points. Solomon Smith, Jalen Lowery, and T.J. Harvin each tallied 10 points. Smith grabbed a team-high six rebounds while Clenzo Ross finished with five assists.
The Warriors made 32 percent (12-38) of its shots from the field in the second half and 36 percent (26-72) for the game.
The tournament wraps up tomorrow with Southern Wesleyan taking on Lander at 5:30 p.m. Flagler plays the final game at 7:30 p.m. against Anderson.
