Flagler receives No. 7 seed and opens regional against Queens

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Flagler College volleyball team earned an at-large berth and received the No. 7 seed in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional which will be held Dec. 5-7 at Cuddy Arena and Thomas Koontz Family Court on the campus of Wingate University in Wingate, North Carolina. The winners of the eight regionals will advance to the national finals Dec. 12-14 at the Aurora Events Center in Denver, Colorado.

Flagler (23-8) opens play in the regional against Queens University of Charlotte (24-6). The match will be the second quarterfinal of the day, following the Carson-Newman University-Anderson University match that begins at noon. The Saints hold a 2-1 record against the Royals all-time with all three meetings occurring during the postseason. In 2013, the two teams met on Dec. 5, at Wingate, with Flagler coming away with a 3-0 sweep.

The Saints, who have won 15-of-their-last-17 matches, shared the regular season Peach Belt Conference title and was the conference tournament runners up. Three-time all-conference selection Karlie Redfern leads the Flagler offensive attack. The junior outside hitter has recorded 324 kills and collected 291 digs. Redfern has 11 double-doubles this year, including a 14-kill, 21-dig performance in the semifinal round of the PBC Tournament against Lander University. Redshirt freshman Rachel Machovec posted 10 double-doubles and earned second-team all-conference honors. The outside hitter from Dacula, Georgia has racked up 298 kills, 306 digs, and 27 service aces. Kennedy Muff received PBC Freshman of the Year honors and earned second-team all-conference accolades. The setter from Bristol, Wisconsin has tallied 1,068 assists to go along with 123 kills, 260 digs, and 26 aces.

The Royals earned an at-large berth like the Saints. Queens had its nine-match winning streak snapped in the South Atlantic Conference title match against Carson-Newman, 3-0. Junior outside hitter Casey Tarvin leads the team offensively. The first-team All-SAC honoree has recorded 370 kills and has 438 digs on the defensive end. She has 19 double-doubles so far this season, which includes a 24-kill, 17-dig match against Tusculum. Queens had a pair of second-team all-conference players in Logan Witt and Mallory Swarts. Witt, a junior middle hitter, is second on the team in kills with 275 as is her 89 total blocks. Swarts, a senior setter, has tallied 1,054 assists and served up a team-high 46 aces.

Both coaches, Matt Affolder of Flagler and Hannah Long of Queens, were named the coach of the year by their respective leagues this year.
