McCall’s 26 points not enough in loss to Young Harris

ST. AUGUSTINE – Vaughn McCall scored 19 of his team-high 26 points in the first half, but it was not enough in Flagler College's 102-92 loss to Young Harris College in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.

Young Harris won its fifth game in a row and improved to 9-7 overall. The Mountain Lions raised their conference record to 7-3. Flagler slipped to 5-9 overall and 2-6 in league play.

The Mountain Lions used a 14-2 spurt midway through the second half to erase the Saints' 70-67 lead. Ryle Owens scored 10 of those points for Young Harris, including seven in a row. His dunk at the 10:12 mark started the run and his 3-pointer 40 seconds later gave Young Harris a lead (72-70) it would not relinquish.

Owens led all scorers with 30 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the field and was 7-for-10 from 3-point range. He scored 25 points in the second half. Owens made eight-of-his-last-nine shots from the field.

Justin Jones and Alphonso Willis each added 21 points. Brian Harper tallied 10 assists.

McCall sank five 3-pointers and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line for the Saints. He added five assists and two steals to his line. Gedi Juozapaitis recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 19 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Damerit Brown and Kris Totoris both chipped in with 10 points. Logan Swackhammer dished out a season-high seven assists.

Flagler made its first 10 free throws and finished with an 81.8 percent mark (18-22). The Saints committed a season-high 23 turnovers which led to 29 Mountain Lion points.

Up next for Flagler is a home date on Monday against the University of North Georgia at 3:30 p.m.
