WINGATE, N.C. –
Sam Coombes scored his first collegiate goal in the third minute but Wingate University answered with four goals to defeat Flagler 4-1 in a non-conference men's soccer match Saturday evening at the Wingate Soccer Complex.
Wingate improved to 2-1-1 while Flagler dropped to 1-2-0.
"I am proud of the team for coming out and grabbing the early lead," said head men's soccer coach
Chris Kranjc. "But hand it to Wingate for battling back and earning the win. We have work to do in different areas, but we will get there."
Tryggvi Magnusson assisted on the lone Flagler goal.
The equalizer came in the 19
th minute Elliot Cutts headed in Jakob Sellhed's corner kick.
The Bulldogs took the lead for good when another corner kick was directed into the back of the net. Sellhed's corner kick went in towards the front post where Erik Marcussen was able to tap the ball in.
Nate Evans (66') and Marco Sellen (70') added goals for Wingate.
Pablo Jara recorded one save for the Bulldogs.
Mel Broughton started for the Saints and recorded three saves while
Iwan Roberts tallied one save in the second half.
Wingate out-shot Flagler 19-5 and held an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Bulldogs took 10 corner kicks while the Saints had one. Fouls were nearly split in half with Wingate caught for 15 infractions and Flagler had 14.
Flagler heads south to Melbourne, Florida on Tuesday (Sept. 11) for a non-conference match against Florida Tech at 7 p.m.
