ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. –
Karlie Redfern recorded a match-high 16 kills to help lead Flagler College to a 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-20) sweep of Molloy College in a non-conference volleyball match Friday afternoon at Quealy Gymnasium.
Flagler snapped a six-match losing streak to improve to 2-6. Molloy dropped its second consecutive match and fell to 4-3. Molloy was ranked No. 3 in the NCAA Division II East Region last year with a 23-5 record.
"Molloy has a few athletic weapons and they also serve very tough and in different ways," said
Matt Affolder, Flagler head volleyball coach. "Our team had a great energy about them and we handled our offense. Karlie (Redfern) was very active and had a great match, and although the ace numbers won't show it, our servers did a really good job of disrupting Molloy's offense. I thought
Lily Loeffler made a great impact on the match as well in her serving and passing/defense role."
Redfern finished with a sizzling .368 hitting percentage as she only had two errors on 38 swings.
Raquel Kulak added six kills while
Logan Garcia and
Cadie O'Hern each recorded five kills. O'Hern tied her career-high with four total blocks.
Tara Savisky tallied 31 assists.
Kayla Norelli collected a team-high 12 digs.
Carly Banks led the Lions with 11 kills. Sophia Smith tallied 32 assists while Meaghan Carr collected a match-high 17 digs.
In the first set, Flagler rallied from a 4-2 deficit by going on a 7-0 run and never trailed again. Redfern recorded three kills in the run with the last one prompting a Molloy timeout as it trailed 9-4. The Lions got as close as two several times during the remainder of the set, including 24-22, but
Regan Swift put the set away for the Saints with a spike off the arms of a Molloy front row player. Redfern had seven kills and just one error on 14 swings for a .429 hitting percentage.
Redfern continued with the red-hot hand in the second set with five kills on seven errorless swings for a .714 percentage. The Saints hit .370 as a team.
The final set had nine ties and one lead change, but the Saints prevailed by five (25-20). With the score tied at 11, a bad set and an attack error gave Flagler the lead for good. Savisky's kill gave the Saints a 24-20 lead. On match point, Garcia and O'Hern blocked Hailey Wehr's attack to end the match.
Flagler heads to Brookville, New York to face LIU Post for a match tonight at 7 p.m.
