BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Flagler College senior setter
Tara Savisky became the program's all-time leader in assists (4,156) and it came on match point in a 3-1 (25-23, 20-25, 25-19, 25-23) win over Long Island University Post Friday night at the Pratt Center.
Flagler improved to 3-6 on the season while LIU Post had its three-match winning streak snapped and fell to 6-3.
Savisky broke a 16-year old record previously held by Liz Hebenstreit (2000-02).
Logan Garcia benefited from the record-breaking assist as her spike ended the match in the fourth set (25-23).
"I can't say enough about Tara (Savisky) and how honored I am to be her coach," said Flagler head volleyball coach
Matt Affolder. "It was great to see her become our program's all-time career assist leader on the match point kill. To have her wearing a Flagler jersey these four years has been integral to our success. I am incredibly grateful to be her coach."
The Oakdale, Pennsylvania native recorded her third double-double of the season with 42 assists and 11 digs. Flagler had a balanced offensive attack led by
Karlie Redfern's 14 kills.
Cadie O'Hern added 13 kills while
Raquel Kulak tacked on 12 kills and hit .400 with only two errors on 25 swings. Kulak and Redfern were active at the net on defense with each recording five total blocks. Garcia added four more.
Kayla Norelli corralled 20 digs.
Sarah Schark collected a career-high 14 digs.
"Our players really persevered and did a great job of learning throughout the match to push for points," said Affolder. "This was Logan's best match thus far as she was really driving offensively and did a great job with her block presence. Raquel really carried us at times and Kayla was a rock in serve receive."
Rachel Londot recorded a match-high 19 kills and completed the double-double with 13 digs for the Pioneers. She hit .319 with four errors on 47 swings. Lauren Kloos added 13 kills while Kiora Ridgeway contributed seven kills and five total blocks. Kassie Akouri-Tejedor tallied 25 assists and had three aces. Abby Eckhardt finished with a match-high 24 digs.
The match was back-and-forth throughout as indicated by the fact there were 26 ties and six lead changes.
The Saints opened the first set on a 7-1 run, but had to hold off the stubborn Pioneers late. LIU Post fought off three set points and closed to within one (24-23) after Akouri-Tejedor's second consecutive ace. Redfern ended the Pioneers' hopes with a spike.
LIU Post led for nearly the entire second set despite Kulak recording five kills and hitting .500.
O'Hern led the Saints in the third set with four kills and an .800 hitting percentage as she had five errorless swings.
The fourth set featured 11 ties. With the score tied at 23, Kulak's kill, from Savisky, gave the Saints a 24-23 advantage. Savisky's assist tied the career record. Then Garcia's kill ended the match.
Flagler will conclude the Long Island swing tomorrow (Sept. 8) against the University of New Haven at noon at Molloy College.
