AIKEN, S.C. –
Maria Castorino Mujica scored a pair of goals in Flagler College's 5-1 win over the University of South Carolina Aiken in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match Wednesday evening at Pacer Pit.
Flagler won its second consecutive match and improved to 5-2-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the Peach Belt. The Pacers lost their second consecutive match and dropped to 1-4-0 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play. This was USC Aiken's first match since Sept. 9 as three matches were postponed due to the hurricane.
"USC Aiken came at us with real intensity and tried to press us all over the field," said head coach
Ashley Martin. "We made a lot of bad decisions in possession which we tried to address at halftime. As the game wore on, we started to assert our dominance and create more chances."
Castorino Mujica's first goal came in the 24
th minute when she came in from the left corner and dribbled past a defender and knocked the ball in from close range. That gave Flagler a 2-0 lead.
The Saints added to that lead early in the second half when
Sara Sandberg scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season in the 56
th minute.
Annie Breen and
Annie Habeeb also scored goals for the Saints.
Charlene Nowotny assisted on Castorino Mujica's second goal.
Sarah-Lisa Dubel collected two saves for Flagler while Makenzie Cude had three for USC Aiken.
The Saints out-shot the Pacers 19-5, including an 8-3 spread in shots on goal. Flagler had 10 corner kicks while USC Aiken had five. The Pacers were caught for 13 fouls while the Saints were reprimanded seven times.
