Nowotny’s free kick sends Flagler over UNC Pembroke; Dubel records shutout

ST. AUGUSTINE – Charlene Nowotny's goal in the 63rd minute was the only offense needed as Flagler College blanked the University of North Carolina at Pembroke 1-0 in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match Saturday night at Saints Field.

Flagler won its third match in a row and improved to 6-2-0 overall and 4-1-0 in the Peach Belt. The Saints are undefeated in their last four meetings (2-0-2) with the Braves. UNC Pembroke fell to 2-2-0 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play.

The Braves had not played a complete match since Sept. 8. They had two matches postponed by Hurricane Florence and their most recent match (Sept. 26) at Catawba was declared a no contest as the match was stopped in the 53rd minute because of lightning and the match never resumed.

"I am delighted with the victory," said head Ashley Martin, "but particularly the performance. UNC Pembroke made us earn everything tonight. They looked to punish us for any mistakes, but we did not give them the chance they craved."

Nowotny's free kick from just outside the penalty box was her fourth goal of the season.

The Braves were held to just three shots on goal and all three were saved by Sarah-Lisa Dubel who turned in her second clean sheet of the season.

Flagler out-shot UNC Pembroke 7-3, but the Braves held a 3-2 edge in shots on goal. UNCP took nine corner kicks while Flagler had two. The Saints committed 14 fouls while the Braves were whistled for 12.

Up next for Flagler is a date at Georgia College on Saturday (Oct. 6) at 3 p.m. in Milledgeville.
