Saints power past Lakers, 5-0

MORROW, Ga. – Sara Sandberg scored a pair goals and Myiah Russack-Cradeur added another and assisted on one to help Flagler College to a 5-0 triumph over Clayton State University in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match Saturday afternoon at Laker Field.

Flagler improved to 4-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the Peach Belt. This was the first time the Saints won at Morrow since Sept. 15, 2012. Clayton State suffered its first loss and fell to 3-1-2 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play.

"I am delighted with the response from the team after a tough loss on Wednesday," said head coach Ashley Martin. "Clayton State tried everything within its power to prevent us from playing soccer, but the team adapted well. We not only out-played Clayton State, but we out-battled them too, which gave me an immense amount of pride."

Russack-Cradeur got the Saints on the board with another early goal. She knocked in Charlene Nowotny's corner kick in the fourth minute, which is the fourth time this season Flagler has scored a goal within the first four and one-half minutes.

Sanberg scored the first of her two goals on the 14th minute when she took Annie Breen's through ball and went on to finish in the box to stake the Saints to a 2-0 lead.

Annie Habeeb added a goal, assisted by Hannah Dolores, in the 32nd minute and the Saints took that 3-0 lead into the half.

Maria Castorino Mujica netted her first goal of the season in the 72nd minute and Sandberg capped the scoring when she converted a penalty kick in the 87th minute.

Sarah-Lisa Dubel recorded five saves for the Saints in 60-plus minutes of work. Maddison Lipson corralled a save in relief. Hannah Richards collected four saves for the Lakers.

Flagler out shot Clayton State 14-8 and held a 9-6 edge in shots on goal. The Lakers took four corner kicks while the Saints took just two. Flagler was whistled for nine fouls and Clayton State was tagged for five.

Flagler stays on the road and will head to the University of South Carolina Aiken on Wednesday (Sept. 26) for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
