Saints hold off Bobcats in five; Savisky breaks conference assist record

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Raquel Kulak recorded a career-high 26 kills and Tara Savisky broke the Peach Belt Conference record for career assists as Flagler College held on to defeat Georgia College 3-2 (25-21, 25-19, 25-27, 17-25, 15-13) in a PBC volleyball match Saturday afternoon at the Centennial Center.

Flagler improved to 6-8 overall and evened its Peach Belt record at 1-1. Georgia College ha d its two-match winning streak snapped and dropped to 7-6 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

Kulak finished with a .434 hitting percentage as she had only three errors on a career-high 53 swings. She added seven block assists.

Savisky tallied a season-high 58 assists, and needed just 30, to break the rally-scoring era record for career assists that was previously held by Lander University's Jessica Register (2011-14) with 4,302. The record breaker came in the third set when her set led to a Regan Swift kill to give Flagler an 11-9 lead.

"I am really proud of our team for digging down deep and staying together as we were struggling in the fifth set," said head coach Matt Affolder. "Raquel put up one of the great performances of any Flagler middle hitter with those career numbers and efficiency. She was determined all match and I saw a drive and hunger in her that this team needs every day.

"Regan played the best match of her career and really lifted us at key moments," added Affolder. "I am also so proud of Tara as she is now the all-time career assists leader in conference history. She is putting her name atop some incredible lists, and when you look at all that she has accomplished, it is truly amazing. I am incredibly thankful to be her coach."

Karlie Redfern recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 15 kills and 20 digs. She added five total blocks to her line. Cadie O'Hern and Swift each added 10 kills. Kayla Norelli collected 20 digs.

Libby Bochniak led Georgia College with 24 kills and 13 digs. Taylor Svehla added 18 kills and five total blocks. Kayla Brockway recorded a double-double with 51 assists and 18 digs. She added four block assists. Jordyn Moellering collected a match-high 29 digs.

The match featured 25 ties and 13 lead changes.

The Saints won the first two sets, but the Bobcats came back to win the next two to force a deciding fifth set.

Flagler fell behind early, 3-0, after a pair of hitting errors. A Nicole Cohen ace gave Georgia College a 5-2 lead, which forced a Flagler timeout.

The Saints scored the next two points thanks to kills by Kulak and Redfern, but the Bobcats would go on a 5-2 run to force Flagler's second timeout of the set.

Flagler chipped away and tied the score at 12 on a kill by Kulak. With the score tied at 13, Bochniak had an attack error to give the Saints match point. After a Bobcat timeout, the Saints ended the match when Kulak and Redfern combined to block Svehla.

Flagler returns for its first home match since Aug. 25 when its hosts Lander on Friday (Sept. 28) at 6 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
