Augusta sweeps Flagler in conference opener

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Chloe Allen recorded a match-high 10 kills and hit .471 to go along with four aces to lead Augusta University to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-22) win over Flagler College in a mutual Peach Belt Conference volleyball opener Friday night at the Christenberry Fieldhouse.

Augusta extended its winning streak to three matches and improved to 11-2 overall. The Jaguars snapped a nine-match losing streak to the Saints. The last Augusta win in the series came nearly four years ago (Sept. 20, 2014), which was also a sweep at Augusta. Flagler had its two-match winning streak snapped and dropped to 5-8.

Allen only had two errors on 17 swings. Savanna Gonzales added seven kills while McKenzey Beck added six kills, 15 assists, six digs and three block assists. Jessica Hedrick contributed six kills and seven block assists. Holland Martin collected 15 digs.

The Jaguars held the Saints to a .030 hitting percentage. Augusta finished with eight total team blocks. Flagler had 24 hitting errors.

Raquel Kulak led the Saints with eight kills. Karlie Redfern added seven more while Logan Garcia tacked on six kills. Tara Savisky tallied 26 assists while Kayla Norelli gathered a match-high 18 digs.

Augusta opened the match on a 9-1 run and never looked back.

The second set nearly mirrored the first as the Jaguars got out early thanks to a 10-2 run.

Augusta sprinted out to a 5-1 lead in the third set, but was able to close the gap to one (13-12) on a hitting error by Kim Krutsinger. However, the Jaguars would go on a 4-1 run and held off the Saints late.

Flagler heads to Milledgeville to take on Georgia College tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Centennial Center.
