Saints overcome weather and Argonauts to record first win

ST. AUGUSTINE – The Flagler College men's soccer team had to battle the elements as well as a tough University of West Florida side, but came away with a hard-fought 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon at Saints Field.

Flagler improved to 1-1-0 on the season while West Florida dropped to 0-1-1. The win by the Saints was their first over the Argonauts in five tries (1-4-0).

"I was very pleased with our response from the other night against Spring Hill College (a 2-0 loss)," said Chris Kranjc, who pocketed his first win as the Flagler men's head soccer coach. "We played through very tough conditions today, including facing a very good and well-coached West Florida team. The guys put together a complete 90 minutes to earn the win."

After a scoreless first half, Flagler was able to get on the board after Keiron Matthews headed in Kyle Doherty's pass into the box in the 78th minute.

In the 84th minute, West Florida's goalkeeper Jacob Murray was issued a yellow card after tripping up Samba Diop who was in the goal box on a free kick. That set up a penalty kick for Tryggvi Magnusson. He converted to give the Saints a little insurance.

The Argonauts got on the board in the 90th minute when Isaiah Lopez headed in Rafael Godoi's corner kick to the far post.

Mel Broughton got the starting nod in goal for the Saints and recorded three saves in 51 minutes of work. Iwan Roberts started the second half, but had to come off the pitch in the 85th minute. He recorded one save. Murray recorded two saves for the Argonauts.

West Florida out-shot Flagler 14-8 and held a slight 5-4 advantage in shots on frame. The Argonauts enjoyed a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks and the two teams split a total of 30 fouls.

Today's match was halted twice due to the weather for approximately 1-hour and 41-minutes.

Flagler will take on regional power Wingate University, currently ranked No. 18, on Saturday (Sept. 8) at 5 p.m. at the WU Soccer Complex.
