YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. –
Sara Sandberg scored two second half goals to give Flagler College a 2-0 win over Young Harris College in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match Saturday afternoon at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
Flagler improved to 3-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the PBC. Young Harris slips to 1-3-0 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play.
Sandberg broke the scoreless tie with her goal in the 66
th minute.
Charlene Nowotny tapped a through ball to her left to find the charging Sandberg, in the middle of the box, and she put the ball into the lower right corner.
Just about seven minutes later,
Maria Castorino Mujica sent a touch pass into the box to a wide open Sandberg who was about six yards away from the goal. Sandberg rifled a shot into the bottom corner of the goal to stake the Saints to a 2-0 lead.
"Young Harris made it difficult for us to break them down and they limited our chances on in the first half," said head coach
Ashley Martin. "The second half saw a real shift in the mentality and execution from our players, which resulted in more shots and ultimately two good goals. The most pleasing part of the game is the shutout, which is something we have been working hard to achieve."
Sarah-Lisa Dubel turned in a clean sheet in her first full-game this season. She recorded three saves. Pien Van Kampen recorded six saves for Young Harris.
Flagler out-shot Young Harris 24-8, which included an 8-3 spread in shots on goal. The Saints held an 18-4 margin in shots in the second half alone. Flagler had a 5-2 margin in corner kicks and were whistled for 12 of the 22 fouls.
Flagler hosts No. 5 Columbus State University on Wednesday (Sept. 19) at Saints Field at 4 p.m.
