FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. –
Karlie Redfern (12 kills),
Cadie O'Hern (11) and
Raquel Kulak (11) accounted for 34 of Flagler College's 43 kills in a 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-19) sweep of Emmanuel College in a non-conference volleyball match Saturday morning at the Shaw Athletic Center.
Flagler raised its record to 5-7 while Emmanuel had its two-match winning streak snapped and fell to 7-6.
"Emmanuel is a well-balanced, strong and athletic team," said head coach
Matt Affolder. "I really liked the mentality of our players. We had great focus on defense and we played with more physicality than I've seen all season. Cadie had a great weekend and is getting better and more comfortable every day. Logan (Garcia) had a huge presence and is gaining a lot of confidence each match. I thought Kayla (Norelli) was as good as she has been all year controlling the back court."
Flagler hit a season-best .356 as the Saints only had 11 errors on 90 swings. O'Hern hit a career-best .474 with just two errors on 19 swings. Kulak finished with a .381 percentage. Redfern recorded her fifth double-double of the season, and second in a row, when she tacked on a team-high 10 digs to her line. The Saints collected 10.0 team blocks and were led by Garcia's six while Kulak and
Regan Swift each added four.
Tara Savisky tallied 32 assists to go along with four kills and three block assists.
Jessica Gray led Emmanuel with 10 kills. Stephanie Hardy tallied 32 assists while Aysha Avery collected a match-high 13 digs.
The Saints had a tough time shaking the Lions in the first set, but a 4-0 run broke open a 13-all tie and Flagler never looked back. A kill by Redfern and an ace by Norelli sandwiched a pair of hitting errors by Emmanuel.
Flagler used another 4-0 run, this time early in the second set, to spring past Emmanuel, 25-16. The Saints hit a sizzling .455 with 18 kills and only three errors on 33 swings. Garcia recorded five block assists in the set.
The third set saw 10 ties and two lead changes. Back-to-back kills by Redfern and O'Hern gave the Saints a 17-15 lead and forced a Lions timeout.
Emmanuel answered by getting one point back after a kill by Mia McKensey, but Flagler would score the next five points in a row to take control.
Flagler opens its Peach Belt Conference schedule on Friday (Sept. 21) at Augusta University at 7 p.m.
