Redfern and Kulak help Flagler sweep Southern Wesleyan

CENTRAL, S.C. – Karlie Redfern and Raquel Kulak combined for 29 kills to help lead Flagler College to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 29-27) sweep over Southern Wesleyan University in a non-conference volleyball match Friday afternoon at Tysinger Gymnasium.

Flagler improved to 4-7 while Southern Wesleyan lost its second consecutive match and dropped to 3-6.

"Southern Wesleyan had an energetic crowd and they really got going in the third set," said head coach Matt Affolder. "I thought our team stayed composed and played strong to finish off the match. Raquel (Kulak) and Karlie (Redfern) were very physical offensively and I thought Rachel (Porada) really set the tone for the match with her serving pressure. Karlie also carried us in serve receive as they targeted her most of the match and her passing numbers were great."

Redfern recorded a match-high 15 kills and she added 12 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Redfern hit an efficient .400 as she only had three errors on 30 swings. Kulak added 14 kills and hit a sizzling .524 with only three errors on 21 swings. She added three solo blocks. Tara Savisky registered a match-high 41 assists while Kayla Norelli collected 12 digs. Rachel Porada added three service aces.

Olivia Johnson led the Warriors with 12 kills while Katie Anderson added 11 kills and 10 digs. Annika Jones tallied 36 assists.

The Saints opened the first set on a 7-1 run and never looked back. The Warriors pulled to within three (20-17), but could not get any closer. Redfern has five kills and five digs for the Saints. Kulak added five kills.

Flagler used an 8-1 run midway through the second set to jump ahead 18-8. Kulak had four kills, hit .600 and had three blocks for the Saints. Savisky tallied 11 assists.

The third set saw 16 ties and six lead changes. Southern Wesleyan broke two match points and took a 26-25 lead after a Johnson kill. A service error and a kill by Logan Garcia set-up match point for the Saints (27-26). A blocking error by Flagler tied the score at 27-all, but a kill by Cadie O'Hern followed by an ace by Garcia finished the match.

Flagler heads to Franklin Springs, Georgia tomorrow (Sept. 15) to face Emmanuel College at 11 a.m.
