ST. AUGUSTINE –
Sara Sandberg scored two goals, including the golden goal, to lead Flagler College to a 2-1 overtime victory over Florida Tech in a non-conference women's soccer match Wednesday night at Saints Field.
Flagler improved to 2-1-0 on the season, won its third consecutive home opener, and is undefeated in its last four home openers (3-0-1). Florida Tech had its two-match winning streak snapped and dropped to 2-3-1.
"We started off well with a good early goal from Sara," said head coach
Ashley Martin. "However, after the goal, we allowed Florida Tech to gain momentum. The second half we showed more of our attacking prowess. In the last 20 minutes of regulation it was very much one-way traffic. I'm happy we are back to our winning ways."
Sandberg broke the 1-all tie 3-minutes and 36-seconds into the overtime period.
Charlene Nowotny fed Sandberg a pass to the right and Sandberg sent the ball into the back of the net.
She scored the first goal of the game, in the fifth minute, when she knocked in
Shannan Matthaei's through ball.
Keira McCarthy scored the equalizer for the Panthers in the 32
nd minute.
Maddison Lipson started for the Saints and recorded two saves in the first half.
Sarah-Lisa Dubel kept Florida Tech scoreless for the remainder to the match with four saves. Maria Sanchez Recuero recorded six saves for Florida Tech. Her older sister, Concepcion, plays for Flagler.
Flagler held a 16-12 edge in shots and a slight 8-7 advantage in shots on goal. The Saints took 10 corner kicks while the Panthers had four. Florida Tech was whistled for 13 fouls while Flagler had nine.
Flagler will open Peach Belt Conference play on Saturday (Sept. 15) at 1 p.m. at Young Harris College.
