ST. AUGUSTINE – Cyril Giraud broke open a scoreless match with a goal in the 55
th minute to lead Spring Hill College of Mobile, Alabama to a 2-0 win over Flagler College in a men's soccer mutual season opener Friday night at Saints Field.
Timo Schabetsberger threaded a pass back to Giraud at the top right corner of the box and Giraud fired a shot into the back of the net.
Just over three minutes later, Alexander Lipinski found Judah Chapman sprinting towards the goal and Chapman finished to stake Spring Hill to a 2-0 lead.
Alessandro Erdelyi turned in a clean sheet with a pair of saves. Flagler's
Iwan Roberts tallied five saves.
Kyle Doherty and
Fannar Fjolnisson had the lone shots on frame for the Saints.
Spring Hill, picked to finish second in the Gulf South Conference, out-shot Flagler 16-10 and held a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Badgers collected 13 corner kicks while the Saints had seven. Fouls were almost evenly distributed as Flagler had 12 and Spring Hill tallied 10.
Flagler returns to action on Sunday (Sept. 2) against the University of West Florida. The game will kick-off at 2 p.m. at Saints Field.
