LAKELAND, Fla. –
Myiah Russack-Cradeur's goal just four seconds before the half proved to be the game-winner as No. 21 (United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25) Flagler College defeated Florida Southern College 3-1 in a non-conference women's soccer match Thursday evening at Moccasin Field.
Flagler continues to be undefeated in its last four season openers (3-0-1). Florida Southern had its five-match winning streak against the Saints snapped. The last Flagler win came Oct. 30, 2004, 2-0, at Lakeland.
"The game got off to an unbelievable start with both team capitalizing on mistakes," said
Ashley Martin, Flagler head women's soccer coach. "After things settled down we caused Florida Southern a lot of problems with our movement. The Mocs gave us a lot of problems too, and there were times we had to dig in an grind out it out, which pleased me immensely."
Russack-Cradeur scored her first goal of the season off an indirect free kick.
It did not take Flagler long to score its first goal of the season.
Annie Habeeb sent a through ball to a streaking Sara Sanberg who beat the keeper to her right, 14 yards out, just 15 seconds into the match. That is the fastest first goal in the record books for the Flagler program.
Katie Reed held the record when she scored 21 seconds into the contest against Columbus State University, Oct. 13, 2015.
The Mocs scored the equalizer 48 seconds later.
Charlene Nowotny capped the scoring with her goal in the 81
st minute. She bent a shot from the top of the box and into the back of the net to give the Saints a 3-1 lead.
Florida Southern had an opportunity to take a 2-1 lead in the 40
th minute, but Amy Volk's shot was saved by Flagler defender
Hannah Dolores.
Maddison Lipson recorded four saves for the Saints, which included a critical save on a penalty kick in the 75th minute. Crista Noelle Rolfse tallied four saves for the Mocs.
Both teams took 14 shots apiece, but the Saints held a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Mocs held a slight 3-2 lead in corner kicks. Flagler was whistled for 11 of the 20 fouls.
Flagler returns to action next Friday (Sept. 7) when it visits former Florida Sun Conference rival Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at 7 p.m. at Daytona Beach, Florida.
