VALDOSTA, Ga. – No. 25 (
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 30) Flagler College trailed 4-1 through five innings, but scored six runs in the final four innings for a 7-4 win over Valdosta State University in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday evening at Billy Grant Field.
With the win, Flagler extends its winning streak to 14 games and improved to 17-2 overall. Valdosta State dropped to 7-12.
The Saints erupted for three runs in the sixth inning to tie the game.
Frankie Martello hit a two-run single to pull Flagler to within a run, and then scored from second on
Aaron Anderson's base hit up the middle.
In the seventh,
Ethan Crout reached on a fielder's choice, stole second base and took third on a wild pitch. He scored the go-ahead run on another wild pitch by Blazer reliever Joseph Watson.
The Saints added an unearned run in the eighth and added another in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by
Ja'Kobi Dasher.
Nick Martinez (2-0) earned the win in relief for the Saints. He allowed just one hit in 3 1/3 scoreless innings of work. Martinez walked two and tied his season-high in strikeouts with five.
Jett Walsh started and went 4 1/3 innings.
Kyle Hansen saw 1 1/3 innings of middle relief.
Crout collected two singles, scored a run and stole a base. Martello went 2-for-4 with a double, scored two runs and he had two runs batted in. Anderson singled twice and drove in two runs.
Sean Lawlor went 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI.
Quinton Forrester (0-1) pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief and allowed three hits as well as three earned runs. He had three wild pitches. Valdosta State starter Cooper Cain struck out nine batters in five innings of work.
Six different Blazers had a single. Carson McCullers drove in two runs.
Flagler returns to conference play on Saturday when it hosts Georgia Southwestern State University in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on "Red" Cox Day.
