Crout hits walk-off homer to complete doubleheader sweep

ST. AUGUSTINE – Ethan Crout blasted a three-run walk-off home run to right field as No. 25 (Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 30) Flagler College completed the doubleheader sweep of Georgia Southwestern State University Saturday at Drysdale Field. Flagler won the opener 5-3 and then took game two 4-2.

Flagler extended its winning streak to 16 games and improved to 19-2 overall and remain perfect in the Peach Belt at 11-0. Georgia Southwestern lost its fifth game in a row and fell to 3-14 overall and 0-11 in conference play.

In the opener, the Saints scored single tallies in the first four innings and then plated  another in the seventh.

Jason Moore knocked in the eventual game-winning run in the fourth inning when he doubled down the left field line, which scored Steven DiPuglia.

DiPuglia hit a run-scoring double in the seventh for insurance.

Robert Girgis (4-0) allowed just five hits and one run in six innings to earn the win. He fanned a season-high 11 batters. Nick Martinez finished the final 2 2/3 innings and kept the Hurricanes off the scoreboard to pick up his second save. He struck out four batters.

Moore finished 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, one run batted in and he scored a run. Sean Lawlor collected two singles and drove in a pair of runs. DiPuglia went 2-for-4 with the double.

Mitch Holloway (1-4) lasted five innings and allowed seven hits and three earned runs. A.J. Hayes tossed the last three frames.

Jason Baita went 3-for-4 with two doubles and he scored two runs for Georgia Southwestern. Andy Moore went 3-for-5 with two doubles. Jared Jones collected two singles and had one RBI.

In the nightcap, the Saints trailed the entire way. Kyle Britt had tossed eight innings for the Hurricanes and he scattered seven hits and allowed one run. Britt induced 11 fly outs and 10 more ground outs.

But Matt Hubbard was summoned to pitch the ninth and he struck out the first batter he saw. DiPuglia ripped an 0-2 offering into center field for a single and Ja'Kobi Dasher worked a nine-pitch walk. Crout then turned around a 1-1 fastball and sent it over the right field wall to end the game.

He went 2-for-5 in the second game for the Saints.

Ryan Ashworth (4-1) scattered six hits and allowed two runs to pick up another complete game victory. This was his third complete game win of the season and his seven strikeouts tied his season and career-high. Ashworth retired 19 of the last 24 batters he faced.

Lawlor went 2-for-4 with a double and Frankie Martello also went 2-for-4 with a double and he scored a run.

Hubbard (0-2) took the loss after pitching one-third of an inning. He allowed two hits and three runs.

Jones, Dakota Long and Jonathan Martin each hit a double.

The same two teams meet tomorrow (March 11) at 1 p.m. at Drysdale Field in the rubber game.

NOTE: Before the game, Flagler's Skeeter Key received the "Red" Cox Award for his many years of service to the youth in the St. Augustine community.
