ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College and Young Harris College split a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday at Flagler Field. The Mountain Lions won the opener 6-3, but the Saints took the nightcap, 4-3 in eight innings.
Flagler snapped a seven-game losing streak and improved to 11-12 overall and 1-1 in the Peach Belt. Young Harris had its 14-game winning streak snapped as it left with a 16-7 overall record and is 1-1 in conference play.
The Saints took advantage of a Mountain Lion miscue in the eighth inning.
Maria Kappos reached on an error by the third baseman Madison Urquiola to start the inning. She was sacrificed over to second base and two batters later scored on
Morgan Murphy's single to center to end the game.
Flagler scored three runs in the second inning with the help of back-to-back RBI doubles by
Jaclyn Mijuskovic and
Garland Evans.
Young Harris rallied to score two runs in the fifth and tied the game in the sixth as a run scored on a ground out.
Ally Marcano (5-5) pitched a scoreless three innings to earn the win in relief. She allowed one hit, walked four and struck out three.
Katlyn McCue tossed five-plus innings and scattered nine hits.
Evans went 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and she had one run batted in.
Natalie Murphy also went 3-for-4 with a double and she drove in a run.
Morgan Murphy collected two singles, scored a run and knocked in the game-winner.
Dharma Rosbrugh (10-4) was the hard-luck loser for Young Harris. She allowed one unearned run on five hits in six innings of work. Rosbrugh struck out seven batters.
Emily Harris was a perfect 4-for-4 with a run scored.
In the opener, Sara Alderman socked a two-run home run in the fifth inning to break open a tie game (3-3).
Rosbrugh recorded the win in relief. She scattered three hits in four scoreless innings.
Harris collected a pair of single while Hannah Harrison went 2-for-4 with a home run and scored two runs. Kristan Lizardi added two singles and scored a run.
Marcano took the loss in the circle for the Saints. She tossed six innings, allowed eight hits and five earned runs.
Evans collected two singles and scored a run.
Flagler continues conference play on Saturday (March 10) against Lander University at 1 p.m. at Flagler Field.
