ST. AUGUSTINE – Jake Maurer's RBI single in the third inning was just enough for No. 3 (
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 30) Florida Southern College to edge No. 6 Flagler College 2-1 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night at Drysdale Field
Florida Southern improved to 18-2-1 while Flagler had its 17-game winning snapped and fell to 20-3.
Moccasin reliever J.T. Hintzen (4-0) came in to pitch in the fifth inning and kept the Saints off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game. He allowed two hits and struck out eight to earn the win. Hintzen retired 13 of the last 14 batters he faced. Matt Martin started and tossed four innings. He allowed five hits, one run, walked three and struck out five.
Cody Burgess led off the game with a home run to right-center.
In the third inning, Dylan Costa led off with a single up the middle. A groundout moved Costa to second and the following batter, Pablo Cabrera, was hit by a pitch. Mauer then blooped a single to center, which allowed Costa to score and give Florida Southern a 2-1 lead.
Flagler scored its lone run in the bottom of the first when
Sean Lawlor's single scored
Dillon Reed, who hit a one-out double.
Cabrera and Mauer each collected two singles for the Moccasins.
Lawlor hit three singles and drove in the lone run for the Saints.
Jett Walsh (3-1) allowed two runs on four hits in four innings of work.
Ethan Jones went the rest of the way (5 IP) and scattered four hits and fanned four batters.
Flagler returns to Peach Belt Conference action on Friday (March 16) at 6 p.m. against Augusta University at Drysdale Field.
