No. 6 Flagler scores game-winning run on a wild pitch

ST. AUGUSTINE – No. 6 (Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 30) Flagler College won yet another game by scoring a run late, this time vanquishing Augusta University 7-6 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday night at Drysdale Field.

Flagler improved to 21-3 overall and remains undefeated in the Peach Belt at 13-0. Augusta fell to 7-17 overall and 5-11 in conference play.

After the Jaguars had tied the game at 6-all with a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings, the Saints found a most unusual way to score the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth.

Evan Lowe worked a seven-pitch walk to lead off the inning against Augusta reliever Cody Pugh (0-3). Nikolas Dague came on to run for Lowe. Steven DiPuglia laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt down the first base line that Pugh fielded and fired to first baseman Ty Hobbs who pulled his foot too early making DiPuglia, who was hustling down the line, safe on the play. Ethan Crout followed by popping up a bunt down the third base line that Pugh and Jaguar third baseman Jim Wagner had bounce in between them as both went for the ball, but one of the players tipped the ball into foul territory and everyone was safe.

After two outs were recorded, Pugh threw a wild pitch, over the head of the catcher and off his glove, which allowed Dague to score an unearned run.

The Jaguars had their chance to take the lead in the top of the inning. Wagner hit a one-out single to left-center. Brent Alford ripped a pitch into the right-center gap, but Dillon Reed was able to cut off the bounding ball and he made a strong throw to Crout, the cutoff man, who then fired a strike home to catch a sliding Wagner at the plate. Alford was stranded at second base.

Ethan Jones (3-0) picked up the win in an extended relief appearance. He tossed four scoreless innings and scattered three hits with a walk and a strikeout. Jones did allow two inherited runners to score in the sixth.

Flagler had five multi-hit players and was led by Jason Moore who went 2-for-4 with a double and three runs batted in. Crout and Reed each hit two singles and scored two runs. Reed added an RBI. Frankie Martello and Aaron Anderson each collected two singles and scored a run.

Pugh took the loss for the Jaguars after allowing an unearned run in two innings of work. He allowed two hits, walked a batter and struck out two more.

Devin Billardello finished with a pair of singles, scored two runs and drove in another. Wagner picked up two singles and scored two runs. Blake Gayle hit a two-run home run to right field, off the top of the fence, to cut the deficit to 6-4.

The same two teams meet tomorrow (March 17) at 2 p.m. at Drysdale Field on "Law Enforcement Appreciation Day."
