Flagler and USC Aiken split doubleheader

ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College's Ally Marcano (6-6) saw time in the circle in both games and earned the win in game two to earn a split in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader against the University of South Carolina Aiken on Sunday at Flagler Field. USC Aiken won the opener 9-4, but Flagler took the second, 3-1.

Flagler is 13-14 overall and 3-3 in the Peach Belt. USC Aiken is now 8-16 overall and 1-1 in league play.

In the second game, Natalie Murphy's two-run double in the third inning proved to be the game-winning hit.

That would be all of the offense Marcano would need as she scattered 10 hits and allowed one run as she went the distance. She walked four and tied her season-high with seven strikeouts. Marcano forced the Pacers to strand 12 runners, including six in scoring position.

Natalie Murphy went 2-for-2 with two runs batted in. Genevieve Mangini and Kailey Perry each hit a single for the Saints.

Hannah Price (2-3) took the hard-luck loss for the Pacers. She allowed only four hits and two earned runs to go along with eight strikeouts.

Brielle Jungblut, Kathleen St. Peter and Sarah Sams each collected two singles for the Pacers.

In the first game, USC Aiken used a six-run uprising in the fourth inning to rally from a 3-1 deficit. The Pacers sent 12 batters to the plate and recorded seven hits.

USC Aiken strung together four consecutive hits, including an RBI double by Courtney Strauss. Sydney Kate Murphy hit a double, scored a run and had an RBI single in the inning.

Flagler took an early 3-1 lead with the help of a two-run double by Garland Evans and she scored on Mangini's single in the second inning.

Lyndi Dorgan (3-6) picked up the win as she scattered nine hits and allowed three earned runs in five innings of work. Caroline Cockrell pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn her first save of the season.

Strauss finished the game 2-for-5 with the home run, a double, two runs scored and two runs batted in. Jungblut hit a single and a double as well as scoring a run. Sams collected two singles, scored a run and drove in two more.

Katlyn McCue (7-8) allowed nine hits and six earned runs in 3 1/3 innings. Marcano tossed the final 3 2/3 innings.

Mangini singled twice, scored a run and drove in another. Natalie Murphy went 2-for-4 with a double and Perry hit two singles and scored a run.

Flagler hosts Eckerd College on Wednesday (March 14) at 5 p.m. at Flagler Field.
