ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Eckerd College Wednesday evening at Flagler Field. The Saints rolled to an 8-1 win in the opener and then scored three unearned runs to win the nightcap, 3-2.
Flagler improved to 15-14 overall while Eckerd fell to 10-16.
In the opener,
Natalie Murphy got the Saints on the board with a two-run double in the first inning and later scored on a wild pitch.
Flagler added two more in the fifth and three more in the sixth.
Maria Kappos hit an RBI single to left in the fifth and
Natalie Murphy had a run-scoring double in the sixth.
Ally Marcano (7-6) allowed only one run on six hits to get the win. She walked six and struck out six.
Natalie Murphy went 2-for-4 with the two doubles, three runs batted in and she scored two runs.
Tatum Morgan collected four consecutive singles and scored two runs.
Morgan Murphy went 3-for-3 with two doubles and one RBI.
Triton starter Grace Willeck (1-3) lasted one inning, allowed three hits and three runs. Janna Gaburo (4IP) and Madison Saltzman (1IP) finished the game.
Crystal Garcia hit three singles for Eckerd.
In the second game, Flagler took advantage of a couple of Eckerd miscues.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth, the Saints loaded the bases with two outs after Morgan drew a walk.
Natalie Murphy hit a a fly ball to left field, but Kayelee Newstrom dropped the routine fly ball and allowed two runs to score.
Ally Costa socked a leadoff home run to right field in the seventh inning to tie the game.
In the home-half of the seventh,
Cassie Patterson led off with a double to left, which broke up Costa's (0-3) no-hit bid.
Kailey Perry came on to run for Patterson and was sacrificed over to third base. On the next pitch, Eckerd catcher Dana Paul tried to pickoff Perry who had stranded off the bag, but the throw got away and Perry scored the game winning run.
Katlyn McCue (8-8) scattered six hits and allowed two runs while going the distance. She walked two and fanned four.
Chelsea Armstrong led the Tritons going 2-for-2 with a double and she scored a run.
Costa walked four and struck out three as she surrendered three unearned runs.
Flagler returns to action on March 20 against Nova Southeastern University at 4 p.m. at Flagler Field.
