Saints sweep ‘Canes to remain undefeated in the PBC

ST. AUGUSTINE – No. 25 (Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 30) Flagler College erupted for five runs in the eighth inning to complete the series sweep of Georgia Southwestern State University with an 8-2 victory Sunday at Drysdale Field. .

Flagler extended its winning streak to 17 games and improved to 20-2 overall and it remains perfect in the Peach Belt at 12-0. Georgia Southwestern lost its sixth game in a row and fell to 3-15 overall and 0-12 in conference play.

Georgia Southwestern scored a run in the top of the eighth inning to close the game to one run, 3-2. The first two batters in the Flagler eighth were retired on two pitches. Frankie Martello followed as he struck out swinging, but the ball scooted away from the catcher and Martello reached first to keep the inning going.

A walk and a hit batter followed to load the bases. Steven DiPuglia lofted a ball into shallow right field that fell just inside the foul line to score two runs. Another hit batter loaded the bases and then Ethan Crout reached on an infield single to score another run. Dillon Reed greeted Hurricane reliever Harrison Timberlake with a single to left-center, which scored two more runs.

Louis Pugliese (2-0), making his third start of the season, tossed 7 2/3 innings and allowed eight hits as well as two runs. He struck out five batters. Pugliese retired nine of the last 11 batters he faced. Ethan Jones closed the game as he retired all four batter he face to record his fourth save of the season.

Crout finished the day going 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and he had one run batted in. DiPuglia collected a pair of singles, drove in two runs and scored another.

Kyle Spinks (0-3) tossed 7 2/3 innings and took the loss for Georgia Southwestern. He allowed eight hits and five runs, walked three and fanned five. Spinks also had three wild pitches.

Andy Moore went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and one RBI.

Flagler takes on No. 3 Florida Southern College on Tuesday (March 13) at 6 p.m. at Drysdale Field.

NOTE: Before the game, the Make-A-Wish Foundation along with Flagler SAAC held a wish reveal for a local child. His wish to go to Disneyworld in Orlando was granted.
