ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College pounded out 26 hits and got a pair of stellar pitching performances in a season-opening doubleheader sweep of Barry University, 8-1 and 7-1, Saturday afternoon at Drysdale Field.
Flagler opens the season with a win for the eighth year in a row and improves to 2-0. Barry, also opening its season, is 0-2.
In the opener,
Jason Moore led off the third inning with a home run to give Flagler a 2-0 lead.
That would be more than enough offense for starter
Robert Girgis (1-0) who tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings and allowed just one hit. He walked three and struck out six. Girgis only allowed four base runners and retired 15 of 17 batters in one stretch.
Kyle Hansen closed the game .
The Saints plated three runs in the fourth with the help of a two-run double by
Dillon Reed. He belted a three-run home run in the fifth. Reed finished the first game 3-for-5 with five runs batted in and two runs scored.
Moore finished 2-for-4 with two RBI while
Aaron Anderson collected two singles.
Nikolas Dague also had two singles and he scored two runs.
Jonathan Hernandez (0-1) tossed three-plus innings and surrendered seven hits and five earned runs. He struck out six, but walked four.
Arrison Perez had a pinch hit double in the top of the ninth and later scored on a ground out. Justin Lamazares led off the game with a single.
In the second game,
Kyle Morton (1-0) tossed seven innings, scattered four hits and struck out nine to earn his first victory in a Flagler uniform.
Nick Martinez pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
After spotting the Buccaneers in a run in the top of the second, the Saints plated three runs in the home half of that inning.
Jimmy Peck hit a solo home run to give Flagler a 2-1 lead and Reed singled home
Ethan Crout (2-for-3), who preceded him with a triple.
Peck hit another solo shot in the fifth. He finished the game 2-for-4.
Sean Lawlor collected a pair of singles while
Evan Lowe went 2-for-4 with a double and he scored a run. Dague singled twice and scored two runs.
Alex Monge had two singles for Barry. Perz hit an RBI-double in the second inning.
Armando Gonzalez (0-1) tossed four innings and allowed 11 hits as well as five runs.
The same two teams meet in a single game at 11 a.m. tomorrow (Feb. 4) at Drysdale Field. The game was moved up due to the forecast of inclement weather later in the afternoon.
