ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College starter
Ryan Ashworth (3-1) tossed his second complete game and allowed just two hits in a 6-1 win over No. 23 (
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 40) University of North Georgia in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Saturday afternoon at Drysdale Field.
Flagler extended its winning streak to eight games and improved to 11-2 overall and 5-0 in the Peach Belt. North Georgia fell to 4-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
Ashworth spun a masterpiece as he faced only two batters over the minimum. He scattered two hits, allowed one run, walked one and fanned five. Ashworth induced 10 fly outs and 11 more ground outs. He finished with 100 pitches, 69 of which were strikes. Ashworth allowed just three baserunners, and one of those was a solo home run.
The Saints erupted in the third inning.
Nikolas Dague led off the inning with a sharp infield single and then took second when
Ethan Crout worked a free pass.
Dillon Reed hit a single up the middle that hit second base and bounded into right-center, which allowed Dague to score the game-tying run. With runners on the corners,
Jason Moore hit a grounder to Jake Arnold at first base. He threw the ball high to second base, but shortstop William Maples was able to maintain contact with the bag. Crout scored on the play to give Flagler a 2-1 lead.
Later,
Frankie Martello hit a two-run single to center for insurance.
Flagler added a pair of runs in the eighth, one on a triple and the other on a wild pitch.
Reed collected a pair of singles and had one run batted in.
Sean Lawlor also singled twice. Crout hit a triple in the eighth.
Cody Collett (0-1) took the loss on the hill for the Nighthawks. He tossed 3 2/3 innings and surrendered six hits as well as four runs. Logan Burt finished the game for North Georgia.
Conner Corbitt hit a home run in the second inning and Crews Taylor hit a double in the eighth.
The two teams finish the three-game series tomorrow at noon.
