Saints rally past No. 23 Nighthawks, 12-7

ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College put up multi-run innings in the third, fourth and seventh to rally past No. 23 (Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 40) University of North Georgia 12-7 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday night at Drysdale Field.

Flagler won its seventh game in a row to improve to 10-2 overall and 4-0 in the Peach Belt. North Georgia dropped to 4-6 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

After the Nighthawks put four runs on the board in the first inning, the Saints were able to cut into the deficit with a three-run third inning.

Steven DiPuglia led off the frame with a triple to center field and then scored on Ethan Crout's infield single. Crout later scored on a sacrifice fly and then Sean Lawlor ripped a double to right field to score another run.

Flagler erupted for five more in the fourth. The Saints strung together five consecutive hits. Frankie Martello and DiPuglia each hit a single and Crout followed with a base hit up the middle to score Martello. That chased North Georgia starter Cade Heil (1-2). Kyle Luigs was rudely welcomed by Dillon Reed who hit an RBI single to right field to tie the game at 5-all. Jason Moore followed with a three-run laser home run over the left field fence to give the Saints an 8-5 lead.

The Saints added four more in the seventh. Moore hit a two-run single. He finished the game going 5-for-5 with the home run and five runs batted in.

Kyle Hansen (1-0) picked up the win for the Saints as he tossed 1 2/3 innings and allowed two hits as well as two runs. Ethan Jones tossed four scoreless innings to earn his second save of the season. He fanned four and walked two.

Crout collected three singles, scored three runs and drove in another three. Lawlor hit a pair of doubles, scored a run and had one RBI.

The Saints pounded out a season-high 17 hits.

Heil tossed 3 1/3 innings, allowed eight hits and six runs to pick up the loss for the Nighthawks.

Chase Sudduth went 3-for-5 with a triple and he scored three runs for North Georgia. Andres Perez, the son of former Atlanta Brave catcher Eddie Perez, belted a grand slam in the first inning.

The same two teams meet tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Drysdale Field.

NOTE: Before the game, head coach Dave Barnett was recognized for winning his 900th career game on Wednesday.
