MELBOURNE, Fla. – Flagler College's Dave Barnett won his 900
th game as a head coach Wednesday night as the Saints posted an 11-5 win over Florida Tech in a non-conference baseball game at Andy Seminick-Les Hall Field.
Barnett becomes the second member of the 900-club this season in NCAA Division II and the 11
th acting coach in D2 to reach the milestone. Barnett is in his 31
st season at the helm of the Flagler program.
Flagler won its sixth game in a row and improved to 9-2 overall. Florida Tech had its three-game winning streak snapped and fell to 4-6.
Flagler opened with a seven-run first inning where it sent 12 batters to the plate and had six hits.
Jimmy Peck opened the flood gates with an RBI single and
Sean Lawlor followed with an RBI double. Later,
Frankie Martello drove in a run with a single and
Aaron Anderson knocked in two with a base hit to give the Saints a 6-0 lead. He later scored on a wild pitch.
Jett Walsh (2-0) tossed six innings, scattered seven hits and allowed five runs to pick up the win. He walked five and struck out four.
Nick Martinez recorded his first save as he tossed three scoreless innings and allowed just two hits.
Jason Moore belted a pair of home runs, had three runs batted in and scored three runs. Lawlor finished 3-for-5 with the double and he scored a run.
Ethan Crout added a pair of singles and scored a run.
Colin Cristello (0-2) tossed one-third of an inning and surrendered six hits and six earned runs to earn the loss. He was one of seven Panther pitchers.
Zac Orchard went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. Raul Gronberg hit an RBI double in the sixth and Jacob Buser also hit a double.
Flagler opens a big three-game series at Drysdale Field against No. 23 (
Collegiate Baseball Division II Top 40) University of North Georgia on Friday (Feb. 23) at 6 p.m.
