Chris Williams scored a season-high 23 points and grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds in a tough 90-87 loss to Columbus State University in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Wednesday night at Flagler Gymnasium. Before the game, the three Flagler seniors (Williams,
Cortlin Davis and
Austin Howard) were recognized before the game.
Columbus State won its third game in a row to improve to 9-15 overall and 9-12 in the Peach Belt. Flagler falls to 9-16 overall and 6-15 in conference play.
The Cougars trailed 47-40 at halftime, but shot 54.5 percent (18-33) from the floor in the second half and contained the Saints to 43.2 percent (16-37). Flagler also struggled from the perimeter in the second half making one of 14 from 3-point range.
Darius Joell led Columbus State with 23 points and seven assists. He sank four 3-pointers. Rudy Winters and JaCori Payne each added 20 points. Marcus Dixon recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds while Vic Ellis tallied 11 points.
The Cougars shot 41.7 percent (10-24) from 3-point range.
Vaughn McCall added 23 points for the Saints. Davis tacked on 20 points, four rebounds and four assists in his last home game for Flagler.
Damerit Brown chipped in with 13 points, six rebounds and five assists.
The Saints shot a blistering 65.5 percent (19-29) from the field in the first half.
Flagler will wrap up its season on Saturday at UNC Pembroke at 3:30 p.m.
