ST. AUGUSTINE – The men's and women's Flagler cross country teams offered their time to the Jail Break 5K in St. Augustine.

This is the second consecutive year that the cross country teams helped run the event. Members of the teams lined the course and handed out bottles of water to the runners and offered encouragement. They also helped set up the event and coordinated the logistics of the finish line, including the distribution of awards.

"Having the opportunity to help in the community with a sport we are so invested in is great," said assistant cross country coach Kaitlin Rodriguez. "Seeing the faces of people as they cross the finish line, realizing they have achieved their personal goal is rewarding. As a runner, you know that moment when you reach your goal and seeing them get that success is a good feeling."

The 5K begins at the Authentic Old Jail and ends at the Atlantic Ocean and is run in conjunction with the Velofest Community Initiative, whose mission is to educate the cycling community at large about the historical significance of cycling, as well as build a mutually beneficial environment where cyclists and 4-plus wheels can co-exist to make a more peaceful commuting experience while decreasing carbon foot print, promoting healthy activity, and promoting the cultural importance of cycling.
